Being one among the new generation departments, the department of Social Work at BVM Holy Cross College has always been able to lead the way. Social Work is a form of professional service to people, comprising a composite of knowledge and skills with the aim of assisting an individual to achieve a standard of life in harmony with the individual and community wishes. Master of Social Work program in BVM Holy Cross College commenced in the year 2005 with a mission to build right attitude, skills and knowledge in the students to work with the needy according to the social work objectives and goals by quality professional education.
The program offers the specialization in Medical and Psychiatric Social Work, Community Development and Family and Child Welfare. Fieldwork practicum that comprises of concurrent as well as block placement seeks to build positive response to social challenges. This program made our graduates rich with varied experiences in take with the requirements of the social work profession.
The department of Social Work has a team of qualified, highly competent and experienced faculty. Teaching and training approaches are however highly personalized with a view to optimizing the overall output. Faculty guided group study and creative discussion sessions help the learner to be actively involved in the teaching learning process.
The department of Social Work has an active placement cell working in the college. The cell establishes contacts with reputed firms, NGOs etc. and conducts interviews for campus placement. It also gives guidance and training to students to participate in tests and interviews conducted in other institutions and agencies.
An intensive career enhancing program with IT support is conducted for all the students. It helps personality development and develops communications skills. Regular programs in personality development, leadership skills and soft skills are conducted by renowned trainers in the college.
The students are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities of the college union, department associations etc. The regular activities include seminar presentations, quiz competitions, training for public speaking, presentation of street play etc.
This association works under the department. ESWA is the sound of service. It focuses on making a difference I the society. We believe that sincere and outgoing love for others can provide the answers to the complex problems of the society today. Our goal is to make a difference in the lives and change the world for the better. Our aim takes us to a number of institutions and individuals in need.
The social work trainees of the department collaborate with the Kudumbashree Mission for field work and other training programs for the upliftment of the families below poverty line. The students also give members of the self helps groups, all possible assistance for better functioning. The students are appointed as Voluntary Executives of Kudumbashree, State Poverty Eradication Mission in various grama panchayaths/ municipalities in Kottayam district. The students deployed, as voluntary executives will report to the President of the Community Development Society (CDS) and closely interact with the president and members of the grama panchayath and member secretary of the CDS. Each student is expected to submit a monthly report of their work to District Mission Coordinator and to the college.
A project on Learning Disability was devised by the department of Social Work to create awareness among the parents. Classes were conducted on learning disability by the social work students of the department in various panchayaths in the district of Kottayam. A medical camp was also organized thereafter with the help of Mental Health Professionals to identify the children with scholastic backwardness.
Edu- care is a unique program of the corporate educational society of the Diocese of Pala to address the needs of those who are backward in their academic performance. The department of Social Work at BVM Holy Cross College along with Pala Social Welfare Society launched this innovative program on October 2006. The task includes making a database of the students with academic problems and offering them special training and counseling on holidays.
Our students attend nearly 10 seminars in an year which are conducted outside the college.
