The department of commerce was established in the academic year 2003 with one faculty Miss Sheejamol Jacob (Asso. Prof), the torch bearer guiding the department right from its inception. It’s her sole 24X7 dedication which has made the department reach to such greater heights from a very humble beginning. The program offered then was B.Com (C.A). In 2006 the college shifted to its new building. In 2011 M.Com (e commerce) course was started and in 2013 the department added one more course B.Com (marketing). In 2019 the B.Com (F& T) batch started replacing the B.Com (Marketing) and M.Com (F & T) replaced M.Com (e–commerce). At present there are 11 staff members out of which two have completed their Ph.D. & other two faculty members are in the process of finishing their Ph.D. There are two faculty members completed their M.Phil. The teaching methods used by the faculty are chalk and board, power point presentations, Audio visual aids, case study methods, group discussions & co–operative learning. The department ensures achieving the program objectives by continuous internal assessment, classroom seminar sessions,peer teaching methods, student’s feedback form, faculty feedback report and regular department meetings to take stock and plan.
The Commerce department incorporates the philosophy of holistic development. In order to facilitate the overall personality of the students, the Commerce Section organizes orientations for the newly admitted students, Cultural Programmes, Inter-Class Competitions, Guest Lectures, Industrial Visits, Remedial Coaching Classes, Subject specific Guest Lectures, Extra Lectures for the Third Year students, Soft Skills Development Workshops, English Speaking Camps, Information and Technology (IT) Workshops, Student Exchange Programmes,outreach programmes, and many more extra-curricular activities. The students are encouraged to participate in various Inter-Collegiate Competitions and have done so with distinction and aplomb. The various add on courses provided by the department are GST, Tally ERP and practical accounting. SAP is also provided to the final year students. For the holistic development Walnut conducts a five to ten day workshop for the final year graduate and post graduate students. The department is proud to have Miss Elsa Mary Scaria as the staff secretary of the college and also Joshy George as the placement coordinator of the college. The department and the students work together as a family for the overall development of each other and the college as a whole. Every semester the final year students participate in the outreach program of the college. The department is planning to conduct workshop on entrepreneurship to the home makers of the nearby locality. As a whole all the members of the department, the staff and the students work for the overall development of the college and the community.
